Ringing In 2012

I feel like I have been hit  by a freight train.

Actually, it was a transport truck.

Last night, we left my brother's house in Essex County at around 8:30.  We were traveling east on Highway 401, the main highway that runs east to west across our province.  The  roads were clear.  About 20 kilometers outside of London, we hit white out blizzard conditions.  Visibility was very bad.  We couldn't see 10 feet in front of our truck but the truck in front of us had it's hazard lights on so we were able to follow along behind him.  We were traveling in the right hand lane of the highway.

Out of nowhere, we heard a horn and watched as the back end of the transport truck slid in our direction. It sideswiped our car, damaging all of the panels on the driver's side.  We managed to stay out of the ditch and right our car - just barely.  All of us are okay.

And the transport truck kept driving.

He didn't stop or even slow down.

There are moments in life that change everything.  I was talking about change from the perspective of resolutions and a new year on Sunday.  Now I'm talking about turn-everything-upside-down life change.

I looked in the backseat at my little girl, who was sitting behind the driver's seat, and thought about 6 more inches.  Six more inches of sliding eighteen wheeler. In fact, I've thought of little else since.

There is no doubt that things in our life have been difficult over the last year.  I try to focus on the positive things in our life here on my blog. But the simple fact is that the strained economy has certainly taken its toll on our business and things are looking different for us this year.  There are other struggles for us too.  Health issues... personal issues...  Our family has pulled together in a way I didn't think possible but it has been messy.

I wonder, what does all this mean?  Are we simply on the wrong path?  What changes do we need to make to our life to bring things back into balance?  I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.  I just wish I could figure out what the reason is.

One thing is for sure, something has to give.

  1. I am so sorry to hear about your challenges last year and this accident. Thankfully, you are all ok and it wasn't a severe accident. We were in an accident a couple of years ago and our car was written off. We were ok, but to this day, I get weird sometimes driving. Drivers are crazy nowadays and I definitely feel it is worse on the roads today, than it was 5 years ago. Hugs to you. Hope 2012 will be a better year.

  3. That must have been so scary. That is such a dangerous stretch of the 401...you guys are really lucky (considering). I understand your fear about what 6 more inches could have meant...I'm so glad you don't have to know the answer to that!

  4. I'm so sorry to hear this and thank God you're all alright! All I have to offer are cliches ("hang in there" "this too shall pass")... But I think that everything happens for a reason too and your experiences over the last year have no doubt made you stronger if nothing else. Things will turn around :)

  5. I'm so happy to know you are all okay! I can't even imagine how scary that was for all of you.
I hope that 2012 will turn things around for your family. At the end of the day you do have one another and that is what's most important!!

  6. I literally had chills as I read your post. Thank God you are all okay.
I know what you mean...when things don't seem to be going my way I always wonder, "what lesson am I supposed to be learning here?".
I wish the answers were more obvious!
