Casual Spring Style

I will be the first to admit that I'm a Gap girl.  I love the Gap.  I can consistently, without fail go in there and find something to wear that looks good, fits well and washes nicely.  I also like their other brands.  So when I was looking for some spring style inspiration, I naturally checked out their site to see what they had going on.

A preppy mix of colours and a length of shorts I can actually wear.

Polka Dots!

Another plan for my fave chambray shirt from Gap.

I love this cognac colour with black and denim.

I like the styling of this dress with the oxford underneath.  I could wear this to work.

If you've been reading for a while, you know I'm not exactly a fashionista.  I like clothes and accessories as much as the next gal, but I often feel like styles are too young for me.  Or meant for someone ... thinner?  There is something inherently wearable about Gap clothes for me.

You should check out the  We ♥ Outfits  section of their site.  I use it to give me ideas for how I can take all my basics and combine them in new ways.

Now, if the weather would just co-operate.  It's the middle of April for crying out loud!

Fall Style

It's not a secret that I love the fall.  Who doesn't?  The crisp air, the changing of the leaves, the kids going back to school, the boots...

I could go on.

I've been working on a little fall style makeover this year.  I will admit that I'm not always the most polished or fashionable woman.  I like classic style but am also always really, really busy.  So, I often wear lululemon pants and sweatshirts on the days that I don't go to work.

I am, in fact, wearing that exact outfit right now.  But I have been working to improve my overall appearance lately.  My favourite fall purchase being my leopard print flats.

Here are a couple of outfit images that are inspiring me this fall:

I love the bright yellow and the printed scarf.  This outfit is really me.  Once someone called me 'the queen of cardigans'.  If the shoe fits... Oh yeah, I also have those flats.

I love brown riding boots.  And I think the black and brown combo is pretty sophisticated.  The skinny jeans are a bit of a stretch for me (no pun intended) but I've purchased a pair from Joe Fresh that are black cords and I love them as long as I'm wearing a longer top.

I am definitely a basics girl.  But I love a funky accessory!  Leopard flats and an orange bag?  I'm in!

What are you wearing this fall?

I live my life in wardrobe basics.  I'm happy this way.

A while ago, I completed Project 333, where you pick thirty-three wardrobe items to mix and match and combine for three months.  You choose items that fit well, are well made and that you feel good in and box up the rest of your stuff.  It was incredibly freeing.

I used to pull out seventeen outfits and try them all on before going out for and evening, say.  Then I'd leave the house and feel completely uncomfortable in the outfit I'd chosen.  Now, I feel confident in everything I pull out of my closet.  Also, since there are so few clothes, I am able to see everything in there.

I'm working on putting together my spring 33 at this point.  These are some of the pieces I have in the mix:

One of my goals is to add more colour this time.  I do get bored with wearing brown and grey all the time.  But that is always what I gravitate toward when I'm shopping.

I found a few boards on Pinterest and they are inspiring me with my wardrobe right now.

Lots of basic neutrals with a pop of colour and cool accessories for interest.  What do you think?

Friday Night Dancing Queen

I'm so excited!

One of my dear friends is turning 40! My girlfriends and I are going out tonight.

Those of you who know me, know that I usually dress myself like this:

or this:

Actually, either one of these outfits would be a polished day for me.  I may not even be this stylish.

We're hitting the town tonight and my inspiration is this outfit:

(only with red heels)

Quite a departure for me. I'll let you know how it goes and if I can still walk in the morning.

Have a great weekend!

TA-DA!

Ok, I had a little trouble with blogger last night.  It didn't seem to like my CSS, so I'm still working on it a bit.  There is a 'featured on' section, link pages, 'contact' section  and social media section still to come.
I'd love any feedback you have on the graphics, or any suggestions you'd like to see on the site.  Hopefully I can get the rest up today.

For now, I'll leave you with this, 'cause I'll be knitting a pair this weekend!

And this, 'cause I could move right in. (except I'd probably stain the island grey instead)

Happy Thanksgiving, Canadian friends!

Bringing Fall into Our Home

Good Morning Everyone,

I'm guest posting today over at First Time Fancy.  I wrote a post for Kerry about the painting I made for my sweet husband for our anniversary.  I hope you'll all go over there to check it out.

So, welcome to all you new visitors from First Time Fancy!

I hope you'll stay a while and have a look around.  If you come back tomorrow, you'll get a chance to see the launch of the new graphics and layout for the blog.  I think I'm just about ready!

I love, love, love fall.  I suppose it helps that we've had a week of near perfect weather here.  Crisp air, vibrant blue skies, russet trees.  Gorgeous.

For some reason, I've got fall fever.  I'm so excited about Thanksgiving this year (here in Canada we celebrate this coming weekend).  I'm looking forward to getting a little fall decorating done around the house.

Welcoming:
I'm not making this wreath.  If I had more time, I might.  Maybe for next year.  But let's pretend it's on my front door to welcome you!

(including the latte!)

Dressing up the Dining Room:

I love the simple palate in the room.  And you might notice that the table is surrounded by a mix-match of chairs.  A few windsor chairs, some slipcovered chairs and a slipped bench seat... I really love this look for my dining room.  If you remember, I wrote about it here and here.

I am hosting a small Thanksgiving dinner at our house this year.  It's really just my parents and our family.  But I want to make it special.  I love natural elements on a tabletop for Thanksgiving.  I'm using some clippings and flowers from the yard, some burlap, and some gourds.

Tabletop:

The above tabletop by Martha is perfect to me.  I love the simplicity.
We don't really do over the top holiday decor around here, although I often admire it in other homes.

Sweet Dreams:

(I had to include this one, because the colour story is perfect for Thanksgiving, and because I love Tommy almost as much as I love fall)

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you'll follow along on my design journey.  This old house is full of surprises and has really been a huge source of inspiration to me.  I'm having so much fun dreaming and planning and designing here.  I would love your comments and suggestions!

Scarf Addiction

I might as well face it.  I'm completely and totally addicted to scarves.

I wear a lot of neutral colours.  Grey, navy, oatmeal, more grey, jeans, more jeans.  In fact, most days I dress like this:

(well, maybe not quite as cool as that, but you get the idea)

(love the way this on is belted)

(stripes and super-softness)

I love the way a scarf adds texture or colour to an outfit and can really bring it to life.  (you might note that all the scarves I choose also appear to be neutral - I'm such a bore).

( I am attempting to knit a lacy one this fall)

A scarf is so perfect for the weather in September.  It's that cozy extra layer.

I'm having coffee with the girls on the patio at my neighbourhood coffee shop today.  I'm walking down in a few minutes.  Jeans and a scarf.  Ahhhhh... fall.
